Using the FinOpps ChatGPT Plugin to Ask Your Business Questions in Plain English

You already open ChatGPT a dozen times a day. Now it can answer questions about your FinOpps account without you ever opening the app — "What's overdue?", "What did I spend on supplies last month?", "Pull up invoice #1429." The FinOpps ChatGPT plugin, built on the Model Context Protocol (MCP), gives ChatGPT secure, read-only access to your invoices, expenses, payments, and customer data so you can ask in plain English instead of clicking through screens.
What You Can Ask Today
The plugin currently supports read access across the parts of FinOpps you check most often:
- “Show me all overdue invoices”
- “What's my current accounts receivable balance?”
- “Get the details for invoice #1429”
- “List expenses from last month”
- “Search for customer Acme Corp”
- “Generate a payments report for last quarter”
- “What's my business profile?”
No exporting spreadsheets, no digging through the invoice list to find one customer — just ask, the same way you'd ask a bookkeeper who already has everything open in front of them.
Currently Read-Only — On Purpose
As of this writing, the plugin can read your data but cannot create, edit, or delete anything in your FinOpps account. That's a deliberate starting point, not a limitation we forgot about: read-only access means you can connect ChatGPT to real financial data with nothing at risk while we prove out the integration.
The plugin is in active development. Write actions — drafting a proposal, creating an invoice, logging an expense from a conversation — are on the roadmap. What ships next will be shaped by how people actually use read access first.
Built on the Same Standard as Claude and Gemini
The FinOpps connector uses the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard for connecting AI assistants to external tools and data. That means the same connector works across MCP-compatible clients — Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, and Cursor — not just one walled garden. Every request is authenticated with OAuth 2.1 and automatically scoped to your organization, so you only ever see your own organization's data.
Getting Connected
